1:45 wonderful shapes [Music] 2:04 almost every day an ice cold wind whistles over the plateaus [Music] 2:25 the handsome Lynx male does not feel the cold thanks to his dense protective fur 2:30 coat Club is already too big for the Boreal Arrow 14:17 The Little Owl has chosen a vacant black Woodpecker's nesting chamber to rear its 14:22 young as with most owls the chicks hatch at intervals of some dad's hotel is very comfortable 18:20 suddenly there's no stopping the young spotted woodpecker 18:30 in the first days of the lynx baby's life the mother rarely leaves the cave 18:36 but hunger victims will remain 21:27 thanks to the numerous Rocky outcrops that provide shelter and protection the Bohemian Forest is also home to the 21:35 lynx's smaller cousin the wildcat 21:41 as a precaution the Tony owl keeps an eye on it although that little Hunter 21:46 cannot really harm her [Music] 21:54 during the day the Wildcat hunts the same prey as the owl at night mice 22:01 the fact that the cautious cat hunts in an Open Meadow shows that she feels safe 22:06 in the sparsely populated woods and Meadows [Music] 22:19 of course one Mouse is not enough for her she has to catch up to 10 a day to 22:25 satisfy her hunger [Music] like the links the Wildcat stalks its 22:32 prey and then attacks it from an ambush position it only hunts animals that are noticeably smaller than itself 22:42 in the Bohemian Forest the Wildcat has little to fear from its worst enemy 22:47 humans and always finds plenty to hit in its hunting ground [Music] 22:59 all right wherever it feels safe it prefers to 23:06 hunt during the day which means it keeps clear of walls and lynxes they are a 23:12 serious source of danger [Music] the links would have no difficulty 23:20 stalking unnoticed in the dense cover of the forest 23:27 the larger cat usually hunts during Dusk and at night but if she has young that 23:32 need regular warming and feeding that is often not enough she will resort to more 23:38 unusual ways if her fine senses indicate a potential source of food the 23:43 dormouse's choice of an old Woodpecker's Nest was a wise one [Music] 23:53 oh the lynx cannot get its core in there 23:59 and the little mouse can curl up and go back to sleep 24:06 [Music] the lynx babies are now two and a half 24:12 weeks old and can see and hear [Music] 24:19 like their parents they are descendants of the animals that were resettled in the Bohemian Forest in the 1970s and 80s 24:27 [Music] 24:39 the lynx was wiped out a long time ago in Europe it managed to hold out longest in the are already laying the fertilized eggs 26:43 the most important task of their lives has now been accomplished as adults they 26:48 will normally only live a few weeks The Offspring will now develop slowly 26:54 over several years in the water before finally coming onto the land and hatching out of their larval skin 27:06 at the age of about five weeks the lynx kittens are developing and and both curious and afraid 27:46 it's good to be near the mother [Music] this kitten has made a surprising 27:53 discovery there are other animals and just lynxes 28:00 even though this neighbor poses no danger to her Young the links plays it safe and fetches The 28:06 Adventurous kittens back before they wander too far away [Music] 28:19 typical of kittens this one immediately goes into the lynx sharpens its claws on rough surfaces the same as domestic cats 28:58 when hunting the poles must be able to grab and hold 29:05 the Bohemian Forest with its numerous Lakes is home to many [Music] the beaver a beaver's teeth are sharp 33:37 and grow continuously and it will chisel away at the trunk until the tree falls this one has managed a lot in the past 33:45 months with the branches the beaver builds its Lodge the entrance of which is always 33:51 underwater this means it can come and go unseen [Music] 34:00 water is the beaver's home and its body is ideally adapted to it 34:06 its flat scaly tail was at one time almost its undoing the Catholic Church 34:12 declared the beaver to be a fish which meant it could be eaten during late 34:19 [Music] foreign 34:27 200 years ago this large rodent was considered the King of fur animals it 34:34 has no less than 23 000 hairs per square centimeter so the fur is denser than 34:40 most at the beginning of the 19th century 500 000 Beaver skins were sold in London 34:46 alone every year as a result beavers had disappeared in many places by the early 34:52 1990s 34:58 is a pure vegetarian as long as it finds green with their mother until they 42:39 are at least five months old foreign 42:50 [Music] Wildcat family shows the natural habitat 42:56 in the Bohemian Forest is still relatively intact here the Wildcat mother can raise her children in safety 43:04 [Music] 43:10 in many places wild cats have disappeared because they cannot COPE in 43:16 purely cultural landscapes and human settlements foreign 43:21 [Music] has been able to develop undisturbed 43:27 mainly because during the Cold War the Iron Curtain passed through today's 43:33 national park [Music] 43:51 in places where Deadwood is left alone fungi have the opportunity to develop 43:58 [Music] 44:05 to neither animals nor plants are hidden in Early Autumn however the mushrooms 44:11 and toadstools appear within a few days [Music] 44:23 forest provides an ideal breeding ground for fungi they cannot 46:37 photosynthesize like plants but must like animals absorb nutrients from the 46:43 soil dead wood and living organisms [Music] 46:52 even fungi have their enemies the great red slugs make inroads into them a knot 46:58 at a snail's pace either in the Bohemian Forest this rare slug 47:06 still has a chance against its almost identical competitor the Spanish slug 47:12 which is spreading almost everywhere on arable land [Music] 47:19 but there is no let up for the bankfall 47:26 [Music] even at higher levels it's not safe from 47:34 the links [Music] 47:45 [Music] this time though the Predator is left 47:50 empty-handed 47:59 now Autumn is in full swing [Music] 48:09 the streams filled with Rainwater and bring a magical touch to the forest 48:15 with numerous waterfalls 48:23 [Music] 48:37 the lynx youngsters have made good progress they are now six months 48:43 and are practicing creeping and sprinting 48:48 [Music] their mother is now able to disappear 48:54 for longer periods and take care of her own well-being [Music] 49:09 however the youngsters are still really children playful and inexperienced 49:18 [Music] 49:25 year with their mother [Music] 49:31 they have a lot to learn before they're as smart as she is [Music] 49:40 at some point however they will leave on their silent pause and Conquer their own 49:45 territory somewhere in the Bohemian Forest in this vast Forest of the lynxes 49:52 [Music]
